Trauma-Informed Care Coaching

Trauma-informed coaching is a specialized coaching approach that recognizes how past or present trauma impacts a client's mindset, behavior, and body, focusing on psychological safety, nervous system regulation, and empowerment rather than diagnosing or treating clinical trauma.

Key Principles and Practices

    • Psychological Safety: Coaches build a secure, non-judgmental environment ("the container") where clients feel seen and heard.
    • Asking Permission & Choice: Coaches actively ask permission before diving into deep topics or exercises to restore a sense of agency and autonomy to the client.

  • Nervous System & Somatic Awareness: Practices incorporate understanding of the brain-body connection, the "window of tolerance," and polyvagal theory to help clients manage stress and stay regulated. [1, 2, 3]
  • Not "Coaching the Story": Rather than digging into or rehashing past traumatic events (which belongs in therapy), coaches focus on present resources, resilience, and future-oriented goals. [1, 2]
  • Clear Scope and Referrals: Trauma-informed coaches do not act as psychotherapists or clinical counselors; they maintain clear boundaries and refer clients to licensed clinical professionals when crisis or clinical treatment is needed.

How It Differs From Traditional Coaching & Therapy
  • Vs. Traditional Coaching: Standard life or executive coaching assumes a client can freely push past blocks with willpower or standard goal-setting. Trauma-informed coaching recognizes that physiological stress responses or past trauma may unconsciously stall progress, requiring a gentler, more regulated approach.
  • Vs. Therapy: Therapy often focuses on processing, diagnosing, and healing deep-seated clinical disorders (such as PTSD) from the past. Trauma-informed coaching is action-oriented, present- and future-focused, and centers on building life skills, resilience, and personal goals.
  • Note: Views on the exact boundary vary—some professional communities on platforms like Redditemphasize that coaches must have solid foundational coaching credentials (such as through the International Coaching Federation) and clear limits to prevent accidental harm.
